Tanzanian government insists on investment in cement factories

Deputy Minister Ministry of Industry and Trade Hon. Exaud Kigahe said the government’s intention is to see all industries in the country produce in large quantities at all times due to the raw materials that make cement available locally.

Hon. Kigahe said this during a visit to the Nyati cement factory in Kimbiji, Kigamboni District, Dar es Salaam Region where he met with the factory’s Chief Operating Officer Biswajeet Mallik and held talks with him.

He encouraged investors to continue to increase investment in cement production to meet market demand due to the raw materials produced in Tanzania.

Commenting on the issue, some traders praised the government’s efforts in ensuring that it addresses the challenges facing traders and investors in various sectors.

“It is good the government has a mechanism to meet with investors to listen to their challenges as it will help build good relations between the government and those investors.”

Nyati factory has a fixed capacity to produce 6,000 tons of cement per year where it currently produces 100 percent.

Iin the last quarter of 2020, according to the October National Bureau of Statistics, the price of cement in Tanzania has risen by 30% to 22,000 in most parts of the country. The high prices were due to the non-production of four cement producers in the country, who were reportedly going for repairs.

Tanzania has been a good supplier of cement outside Tanzania’s borders including Rwanda and Burundi and they have planned to distribute the products in Comoros and Madagascar and that is due to the rapid increase in production.

In 2020 Tanzania’s cement production capacity is estimated at 10 million tons per year and main manufacturers of cement are Twiga Cement in Dar es Salaam, Tanga Cement in Tanga, Mbeya Cement in Mbeya and Dangote Cement in Mtwara in the Southern region
