Market capitalisation, otherwise referred to as market cap, can be described as the total value of the share price of a company, which is publicly traded, multiplied by the number of outstanding shares it has. Once this is calculated, market cap may be used as an indicator of the net worth of a company. Where market cap is concerned, there are many companies that stand out, but five are at the top of the list. These companies are all based in the US and each has a market cap exceeding $300bn at the time of writing. These American companies have surpassed numerous others around the globe due to a variety of reasons, one of which concerns the strength of the US dollar against other global currencies.
