Future uncertain for airlines in South Africa

This year has been filled with numerous challenges, and although the impact of Covid-19 was felt across all industries, the airline industry has shouldered a substantial amount of pressure, and continues to do so, even with lockdown on level 1. March was the turning point as airlines stared speechlessly into an abyss when lockdowns were imposed all around the globe as travel plans were cancelled and countries all over the globe closed their borders. Air travel began to plummet in mere weeks and airlines such as South African Airways (SAA), SA Express and Comair had their revenue streams paralysed by severe drops in flight demands.

The industry has, however, been experiencing increased performance in patches with a slight rebound in domestic demand, but regarding the next twelve months, the hopes of recovery are still grim as South Africa and numerous other countries battle with the second wave of the pandemic. New restrictions and changes to the curfew may eat into the revenue of airlines like FlySafair, Kulula, Mango and Lift that currently have strong domestic focus. They will have to weather the storm following the resurgence of Covid-19 on local and international fronts.

Much anticipated Woolies Dash piloted in South African major cities

Following the Pick n Pay (PnP) Bottles app acquisition, Woolworths is hot on its heels with its own same-day door-to-door cold-chain delivery. Woolworths announced on Wednesday that the trial launch of the delivery service will operate in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria. To set itself apart from the competition which includes those services rendered by Checkers and Pick n Pay, the Woolies Dash will offer an additional service, a ‘store-to-door cold chain’ service.
