Switzerland imposes entry ban on both UK and SA residents

Switzerland has imposed strict entry bans on arrivals from both Britain and SA since Monday. A retroactive quarantine for new arrivals has also been in effect since December 14. These moves have been made by the federal government following the discovery of a new, more contagious variant of the Covid-19 virus. The mutation has not been detected in Switzerland as of yet. A temporary derogation ban is being considered for persons from the UK and SA currently in Switzerland, allowing these individuals to return home, and vice versa for Swiss residents, as per the federal government. In addition, freedom-of-movement privileges have also been withdrawn from British nationals, these originally due to expire at the end of the year with Britain leaving the EU.

Western Cape hospitals heave under strain of rising Covid patient numbers

ICU beds and other resources are spread thin in the Western Cape as more patients with Covid-19 are hospitalised. Should this continue, warned the Western Cape Department of Health, there may be a delay in the admission of patients and other essential services. By Friday December 18, more than 2 000 Covid-19 patients were hospitalised across the Western Cape, with more than 200 of these in ICU. Currently, the department is looking at adding more beds in order to accommodate more patients. Hospitals in the province are already nearing full capacity as the second wave of the pandemic and a new variation of the Covid-19 virus sweep across the country at a considerable rate.
