Some of the hardest-hit businesses in South Africa by Covid-19 include eating establishments. These had to face temporary closures during the hard lockdown and some had to permanently close their doors.
As a result of the ban on alcohol sale, distribution and transportation, the Restaurant Association of South Africa (RASA) is formulating a plan to support an application submitted to the High Court to set aside the ban on liquor. Restaurants are open and operating under the current alert level 3 lockdown, but they are under strict curfew and are prohibited from selling alcohol, which means that revenues from these sales will be lost until the ban is lifted.
The alcohol ban was imposed to release substantial pressure put on healthcare resources. The pressure took the form of increased violent incidents, accidents and related occurrences resulting from alcohol intoxication, especially over the festive season. Wendy Alberts, CEO of RASA, said the association has put together plans to show government that restaurants can serve alcohol in a responsible manner while helping to flatten the Covid-19 curve.
The restaurant industry is not the only alcohol trader pursuing legal avenues against the ban. AB InBev-owned South African Breweries has also resorted to legal action against the government to set the alcohol ban aside.
New Spur leadership under pressure to improve shareholding
The JSE-listed restaurant franchise, Spur, announced that it is starting a new year with new leadership. However, the group still faces a substantial number of challenges, hoping that a new team of senior executives can help to save it by promoting investor confidence. There are several plans by senior executives to improve their share ownership in the business, as shareholders viewed the lack thereof in a negative light.
